SmåRådina’s story began in January 2021. Following the unlawful sentence against Alexei Navalny, dozens of upset and angry individuals gathered outside the Norwegian Parliament to voice their concerns. Shortly after, a Facebook group was created to connect people of Russian origin and those interested in Russia, sharing democratic values and providing a platform for communication. Several supportive rallies ensued, including commemorations for Nemtsov’s murder and the “Love is stronger than hate” initiative by Navalny’s colleagues, as well as protests against changes to the Russian Constitution.
As more people joined the group, the board took the initiative to establish an organisation called “SmåRådina: for democracy in Russia.” The name “SmåRådina” is a clever play on words, combining “rådina,” meaning “homeland” in Russian, with “små,” meaning “small” in Norwegian. It represents the concept of “a little homeland” because the members, consisting of Russians hoping for a democratic Russia, carry their small homelands in their hearts. They aim to preserve this part of their identity in Norway. During this time, the organisation was comprised of a few dedicated activists. February 24, 2022, marked a significant turning point.
After February 24, 2022
In Norway, there are numerous individuals with connections to Russia who felt the need to express their disgust and distance themselves from Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine. They also wanted to demonstrate solidarity with Ukrainians. As a result, SmåRådina experienced growth in both membership and activities. Since then, we have organized several demonstrations in Oslo, protesting against Putin and his regime. Additionally, our members have initiated their own humanitarian projects to support Ukrainian refugees residing in Norway.
Today, SmåRådina is a Norwegian-Russian organisation that:
- Establishes a secure space for individuals holding democratic values, who believe in the potential for a brighter future in Russia.
- Exposes and combats Putin’s propaganda within Norway.
- Condemns Russia’s military aggression towards Ukraine.
- Presents viewpoints on the war from Russians opposing the conflict in the public sphere of Norway.
- Works towards fostering greater respect for individuals, people’s lives, and human rights in Russia.
We collaborate with other grassroots organisations worldwide who share similar values.
Currently, our team comprises over 100 individuals working collectively, and we continuously welcome new members. Join us today to show that a democratic Russia is attainable and support our cause through membership!
